Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2009

The legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. includes social change through non-violent means and recognizing the dignity of individuals. So it shouldn’t be too surprising that the celebration honoring King, “Discovering Dignity: His Legacy Continues” at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University tries to recognize those ideals. “He (King) reminds us of the ongoing work to discover dignity in each member of our campus communities by encouraging us to educate and advocate for change,” said Andy Dirksen, interim assistant director of the Intercultural Center at CSB and SJU.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration that was held on January 19, 2009 was a very energetic event. Throughout the week there were many events that were designed to promote diversity, the respect and understanding that everyone is different. One of the most popular events was a comedic display called “Michael Scott’s Office”. Michael Scott’s Office was “an interactive experience looking at life’s relationships and how people are sometimes treated differently.” The faculty panel that was held on January 15th titled “Places, People, and Practices in the Pursuit of Civil Rights” included “Kelly Kraemer, associate professor of peace studies, who discussed “Bayard Rustin, Sexuality and Civil Rights;” Gary Prevost, professor of political science, who discussed the civil rights trips he has led to the southern U.S.; Aric Putnam, assistant professor of communication, discussed “George Schuyler, Sentimentalism and Satire;” and Kaarin Johnston, professor of theater, discussed “Racism and American Theater.” The student performance was the finale event for the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.

This year’s theme for the student performance was “Changing the Face of Diversity.” The performance gave the CSB/SJU community another opportunity to celebrate diversity by recognizing and enjoying the different performances the glided across the Steven B. Humphrey stage. The students who performed were able to show their respect toward the Civil Right Movement by displaying their diverse talents to honor a man who dedicated the last part of his life to promote the type of fellowship and respect that was present during the week of celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In my opinion, every year the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the College of Saint Benedict/ Saint John’s University matures. I believe that the people who have performed in the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration since their arrival on campus have grown to understand that through our differences we receive positive diverse outcomes.

I cannot wait to see what will happen at next year’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.
